Challenge

Squarespace needed to expand beyond basic website hosting into a comprehensive commerce and financial platform for merchants. Key challenges included maximising payment acceptance rates globally, reducing checkout friction, offering flexible payment methods, and enabling merchants to manage their finances — including payouts, financing, and spending — all within the Squarespace platform without relying on third-party branded tools.

Solution

Stripe provided the full payments and embedded finance infrastructure: Stripe Connect for fund movement, Stripe Payments and Optimized Checkout Suite (including the payment element) for a broad range of payment methods (cards, SEPA Direct Debit, iDEAL, Klarna, Afterpay, Link), Authorisation Boost and Radar for acceptance optimisation and fraud prevention, Stripe Capital for platforms to power Squarespace Capital, Stripe Treasury and Stripe Issuing to power Squarespace Balance, and Stripe's professional services team for implementation guidance.

Execution

The partnership began in 2012 with subscription payment processing, expanding to e-commerce in 2013. In 2023, Squarespace launched its white-labelled Squarespace Payments platform built on Stripe Connect. Stripe's professional services team guided Connect implementation, international rollouts, and the upgrade process. Squarespace Capital launched in the US in early 2025 and expanded to the UK, built on Stripe Capital for platforms. Instant Payouts were introduced with Stripe's technical guidance. Squarespace Balance launched in March 2026, built on Stripe Treasury and Stripe Issuing, with professional services supporting the US launch and upcoming UK expansion.

Results

Squarespace Payments achieved 100% year-on-year growth for its first two years. Squarespace Capital saw strong adoption after launching in the US in early 2025 and quickly expanded to the UK. Squarespace Balance launched in March 2026, offering same-day payouts, cash rewards, and a business Visa card. The partnership has enabled Squarespace to become a one-stop shop for online entrepreneurs, with ongoing exploration of stablecoins for further global reach.
